International Day of Older Persons 2023

Falls are a serious threat to the physical health of the elderly, ranging from minor injuries like bruises and abrasions to fractures or head injuries. Falls can also have a psychological impact, as they may lead to fear, which, in turn, can deter individuals from engaging in various activities. This will ultimately affect a quality of life and increase healthcare costs.

According to statistics, individuals aged 60 and above experience falls at least once a year, with the risk increasing as age advances, especially among those living in urban communities, where the risk of falls is higher compared to rural areas.

Falls can be particularly severe for the elderly, so on International Day of Older Persons, we have some recommendations to prevent falls for seniors.

Exercise Regularly
  • Engage in activities that promote balance and muscle strength in your legs, such as Tai Chi.
  • Consult with experts about proper exercises or fitness programs for you.
Check Your Eyes and Feet Regularly
  • Have regular eye check-ups with an ophthalmologist at least once a year.
  • Ensure that your eyeglasses or corrective lenses are appropriate for you.
  • Regularly check your foot health with a specialist at least once a year.
  • Ensure that the style and material of your footwear are suitable for you.
Your Home should be Your Safest Place
  • Examine the interior and surroundings of your living space for fall risks, such as wet tile floors, stairs, bathrooms, kitchens, and sloping pathways.
  • Avoid placing obstacles on the floor and always keep it dry.
  • Choose non-slip materials without cracks or holes, along with the installation of grab bars.
  • Ensure adequate lighting throughout your home.
Everything Starts With A Conversation
  • Consult specialists when your loved ones are at risk of falling.
  • Keep an eye on medications or dietary supplements they may be taking and study potential side effects, such as dizziness, fatigue, or drowsiness, on a regular basis.
  • Consult specialists about foods and dietary supplements that promote bone, muscle, and nervous system strength.

Following these recommendations can help reduce the risk of accidents and falls among seniors. On International Day of Older Persons, October 1, 2023, let us emphasize the importance of healthcare of our beloved ones.
