Toxic dust PM 2.5, a deadly killer that destroys health
The PM2.5 toxic dust situation in early 2023 is reaching a critical stage. Many areas almost throughout Thailand, including Bangkok, surrounding areas, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Nakhon Phanom, etc., face problems with dust exceeding the standard of 50 micrograms per cubic meter. Air pollution is one of the environmental problems that affect the quality of life of people everywhere. In 2018, the World Health Organization estimated that 9 out of 10 people around the world are breathing bad air into their bodies and estimated that up to 7 million people would die from such pollution per year. From this information, many countries have realized and are making efforts to deal with this problem. But the problem has not decreased and continues to intensify.
Dr. Tanupon Wirunhakarun or Dr. Amp, President of the Bangkok Association of Rehabilitation Doctors and Obesity Education Promotion (BARSO) and Chairman of the Executive Committee of BDMS Wellness Clinic, is concerned about the health effects. Because these pollution problems do not just affect the respiratory system alone. But it can also have a more negative effect on all body systems than you think.

What is PM dust?
Particulate Matter (PM) is small particles consisting of a mixture of solids and liquids suspended in the air. They have different shapes, sizes and chemical compositions, such as inorganic compounds (sulfate, nitrate, ammonia), organic compounds, heavy metals (cadmium, copper, zinc) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). “Various allergens and germs can also be found in these microscopic particles,” added Dr. Amp.
Generally, we tend to classify this particle by its size in microns (micron). That is, if this small dust is no more than 10 microns, it is called PM10 (Coarse particle). If it is no more than 2.5 microns, it is called PM2.5 (Fine particle). And if it is smaller than 1.0 microns, it is called PM1.0 (Ultrafine particle). Currently, we usually pay attention to PM2.5. It is very much a problem and is likely to become more of a problem now.

What causes PM2.5?

As for indoor activities or household activities, they can result in PM2.5 toxic dust, such as smoking, cooking (frying, stir-frying, grilling), lighting incense sticks, candles, lanterns, fireplaces, using photocopiers, etc.
What is the AQI value and how much PM2.5 should it not exceed?
For Thailand's criteria The Pollution Control Department will publicize information using the Air Quality Index (AQI), which reports the concentration of 6 types of air pollutants together, including PM2.5 PM10, ozone gas (O3), carbon monoxide gas (CO), nitrogen dioxide gas (NO2), and sulfur dioxide gas (SO2) to make it easier for people to understand. Amount of dust in the general atmosphere of Thailand according to environmental quality standards The National Environmental Quality Promotion and Preservation Act of 1992 stipulates that the amount of PM2.5 dust should not exceed 50 micrograms per cubic meter in 24 hours and not more than 25 micrograms per cubic meter per year.
On June 1, 2023, the National Environment Board resolved to set a new PM2.5 dust standard, lowering it to 37.5 micrograms per cubic meter. for a 24-hour average and 15 micrograms per cubic meter. For the annual average It will come into effect immediately from the date of publication in the Royal Gazette.
However, “The new standard is still higher than the new Air Quality Guidelines (AQGs) announced by the World Health Organization (WHO) in September 2021, which is that PM2.5 dust levels should not exceed 15 micrograms per cubic meter in 24 hours and not more than 5 micrograms per cubic meter per year,” added Dr. Amp.
How does PM2.5 affect the body?

How can we take care of ourselves from PM2.5?
