What cause teeth discoloration?

Teeth discoloration is changing of tooth color which results in teeth that are not so aesthetically pleasing. This can be one of the big concerns to people nowadays because physical appearance is utterly important for social life. Teeth discoloration is categorized into two types, extrinsic and intrinsic staining.

Extrinsic staining is when only the outer part of enamel is stained from drinking coffee, tea, cola, and red wine. Smoking is also a very strong staining substance.

Intrinsic staining can be caused from many factors as follow:
  • Fluorosis: over exposure to fluoride
  • Tetracycline staining: Receiving tetracycline before 8 years of age.
  • Trauma or accident to the tooth
  • Disorders of tooth development namely; amelogenesis imperfecta or dentinogenesis imperfecta

Additionally, aging process can contribute to both extrinsic and intrinsic discoloration. When the outer enamel layer is worn down due to life-long of function, the inner dentin that is much yellower shows through. Surface staining can also occur much easier due to old chipping tooth structure and restorations.

What is the solution for teeth discoloration?

The treatment depends on the cause of discoloration.  It ranges from simple cleaning and polishing, natural tooth whitening, fillings, root canal treatment and internal bleaching to veneers or crowns. This is why definite diagnosis and treatment planning from highly specialized dentists are mandatory.

There are two different methods of natural tooth whitening; In-office bleaching, which is Zoom! Teeth Whitening and home bleaching.

What is Zoom whitening?

“Zoom” is a means of in-office natural tooth whitening procedure using 25% hydrogen peroxide as whitening agent in combination with 450 to 465nm-light. The whitening agent will be applied on the teeth while the patient is on the dental chair and the light is switched on. When activated, hydrogen peroxide will be broken down causing oxygen to enter enamel and dentin that subsequently bleach the stained substances. During this process, tooth structures remain unchanged, no enamel or dentin is destroyed. This procedure only takes one hour to finish and you will be as good as new afterwards!

Who is suitable for Zoom whitening?

Patients with healthy teeth, but rather yellowish, is the best candidates to achieve the most pleasing result from both home and in-office bleaching. Greyish teeth, especially from Tetracycline staining, are a bit more resistant to just one-time bleaching. Existing dental fillings, veneers, or crowns will not change color with this procedure. Instead, replacement of old restorations in order to improve overall esthetics maybe considered if necessary. But especially for Zoom in-office bleaching, patients do not have to take many nights at home to finish the treatment since it can be done within an hour or two in one appointment.

Maintaining whitening effect

Right after the whitening treatment is finished, certain foods and beverages should be avoided in the first few days in order to maintain the whitening effect. This includes tea, coffee, red wine, cola, etc. Additionally, tobacco products will stain teeth, even after whitening treatments. Maintaining good oral hygiene (regular tooth brushing and flossing) is strongly advised to help prevent stains from building up, and see your dentist regularly for professional teeth cleaning.

Side effect of tooth whitening

While most common side effect is tooth sensitivity for most tooth whitening procedure.  Zoom whitening product contains desensitizing agent such as, potassium nitrate and Amorphous Calcium Phosphate (ACP), which have been proven to markedly reduce the sensitivity. However, sensitivity during the treatment and after the treatment in the first couple of days is not uncommon.
