Dental Implants vs Dentures
What treatment should you use when you unavoidably lose your permanent teeth, whether due to tooth extraction, accidents, or tooth decay to the extent that it cannot be cured, causing difficulties in living your life and leading to unconfident feelings when you smile? How is it different between dental implants and dentures?
Treatment alternatives include removable and fixed dentures. However, currently, a replacement of a missing tooth by using a dental implant is increasingly popular, as the dental implant is a kind of fixed dentures that imitate both the root and the crown of a teeth. However, you don’t have to drill the teeth, and the dental implant gives you a feeling of more natural teeth if compared to dentures.
The dental implant is made from titanium. Its root that is similar to a screw will be embedded into a jaw firmly, in a manner that is compatible to the surrounding tissues. When such false root connects to the jaw, the dentist will crown and bridge the teeth or the denture with the implanted root. This implant can be used and cleaned as if it were a natural one. This root is strong enough to accommodate bite and crushing forces. Therefore, it can be used in replacement of an extracted tooth as well. Last but not least, it helps delay deterioration of the bones that support the root.
For dentures, it is a removable dental equipment that helps increase crushing performance and limits impact that may affect the surrounding teeth, as well as overbites, underbites, and it can be worn and is removable easily. With cutting-edge technology, dentures nowadays look more natural, beautiful, and give more comfortable feelings to the wearer.
There are 2 types of dentures as follows
There are both a plastic denture base and a metal denture base. The wearers can wear or remove it by themselves. One good thing is, it can be cleaned easily. You can choose the number of false teeth, while the price is cheaper than that of a fixed denture. However, there is also a negative effect. As the palate of the denture is wider in order to be firm and perfectly fitted, the wearers may feel uncomfortable out of unfamiliarity. It is maybe noticeable that you’re wearing a denture. Additionally, crushing capacity may be less than that of the fixed denture, so it’s not that good for hard foods.
For a removable denture, you should clean it every time after eating and before going to bed. Moreover, you should remove it before you go to bed in order to avoid hurting the tissues in your mouth cavity, and to prevent the denture from accidentally coming off the gum and block your throat.
2. Fixed Denture
This is a permanently fixed denture, adhering itself to the surrounding natural teeth. However, if some teeth are removed, forming a room inside the mouth cavity, the teeth that are located on the two sides of such room must be drilled in order to make it firm enough to be adhered by the replacing tooth. This process is called bridging. One good point of this type of denture is that its appearance and size look more natural compared to the removable denture. Therefore, it’ll definitely make you feel more comfortable as it has no artificial gums or annoying metal hooks. Moreover, the crushing performance will be much better than that of the removable denture.
Fixed dentures can be taken care of in the same way as we do to our natural teeth. You should take care of them with proper brushing together with uses of dental floss. Moreover, you should seek for advice from the dentist to correctly take care of your dentures.
Both dental implants and dentures are invented in order to replace missing tooth. However, if they are not well taken care of and used in an improper manner, you may lose your surrounding natural teeth instead. Therefore, you should highly pay attention to cleanliness of the equipment and regularly see the dentist for further cavity treatment and care.
