Guided Biofilm Therapy

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is a new approach to dental cleaning that goes beyond just removing hard calculus from the tooth surface. It also eliminates biofilm or bacterial plaque, which is the breeding ground for tooth decay and gum disease.

During GBT treatment, the dentist stains the teeth with Plaque Disclosing Gel or applies blue gel to the tooth surface. This stains the calculus deposits in two different colors: dark blue for older deposits that have been accumulating for more than 48 hours and red for newer, less than 48-hour-old deposits. Afterward, the stained calculus deposits are cleaned using the Airflow instrument, which gently cleans the tooth surfaces in the mouth, leaving them clean and refreshed.

For at least the first 3 hours after receiving GBT treatment, it's advisable to avoid drinking and consuming colored foods because clean teeth are more susceptible to staining.
