Sleep is the key to good health and wellness

Everyone has a lot of things to do each day. Many people tend to stay up late at night and don't get enough sleep. Moreover, some people think sleep isn't important so they end up compromising good sleeping habits. In fact, sleep is not just time out from our busy routine.

Most of us need to sleep well to help our bodies recover from the day and to allow healing to take place. Also, sleep has a profound effect on muscle growth and physical well-being. Therefore, going to bed early and getting a full night's sleep are the best for your body. Sleep is a time when several of the body’s hormones are released into the bloodstream. These good hormones are essential for overall health, keep you healthy and also help you look younger.

Hormones & Sleep

1. Melatonin, which often referred to as a sleep hormone, plays a role in your natural sleep-wake cycle. In humans, melatonin is mainly secreted in darkness during evening hours supporting sleep (11pm–1.30am). Melatonin levels in the blood stay elevated for about 12 hours - all through the night - before the light of a new day when they fall back to low daytime levels by about 9 am. Therefore, if you want the best possible quality of sleep, should try to go to bed on time and sleep in a dark bedroom environment with no bright light to interfere.

2. Cortisol is an essential hormone for human health as it helps you stay focused, energetic, and alert. Sleep deprivation can suppress immune system function and cause tension. The body will produce more cortisol in response to stress than it needs, which can have adverse effects on your body. Because this hormone also breaks down glucose, amino acids, and protein which causes your body to age faster. So if you are constantly in a state of stress, you will look older than you really are.

3. DHEA : Dehydroepiandrosterone is a sex hormone and a very important anti-stress hormone that helps combat stress, burns fat and safeguard your immune system. If you don't get enough sleep, the DHEA would be low which can lead to stress addiction and adrenal exhaustion, a leading cause of illness and acute infection.

4. Growth hormone or anti-aging hormone acts on many parts of the body to promote growth in children. In adults, it helps to maintain normal body structure and metabolism, including helping to keep blood glucose levels within set levels. Growth hormone is normally released during sleep by 10pm and sleep deeply between 11pm–1.30am. If someone consistently gets too little sleep, secretion of the growth hormone is in consequence suppressed.
