Are you familiar with blue light?

 

Blue light is a visible light that has a very short wavelength and produce high amount energy that can be potentiallymore harmful than Ultraviolet light.

What are sources of blue light?

Blue light is originate two sources. This type of light is a natural light the sun. Blue light can also be found the light source created by the house, such as fluorescent light bulbs and the light emitted electronic devices such as the computer screen, mobile phone and computer tablet.

Why is Blue light harmful?

Blue light is classified as harmful light because it can destroy the retina, which is the innermost layer of the eyeball. The retina plays an important role in image formation. Many studies have shown that over-exposure to blue may lead to eyestrains and deteriorative condition such as age- related Mascular Degeneration (AMD) which may lead to loss of vision.

A study Harvard University also demonstrates that Blue light suppresses the secretion of the hormone melatonin, a hormone that promotes deep sleep and delay aging.

How to protect our eyes Blue light:

  1. Wear Blue light-blocking lens or blue filter lens can help protect your eyes and slow down deterioration of the retina. This is necessary for someone who use electronic devices all day long or workers who need to work with light bright light at night. These types of lens can be purchased in large eye wear stores.
  2. Avoid using any electronic devices 2-3 hours before bedtime.
  3. Alternatively, use red light instead of fluorescent light in the bedroom at night. Red light has the least suppressive effect on the secretion of melatonin.
