What Causes Excessive Hair Loss?
Hair loss and thinning may be caused by hormonal imbalance, certain medical conditions, nutritional deficiency, stress, postpartum hormonal changes, medication, or habits that damage the scalp and hair.
What causes hair loss and thinning?
Weak hair, excessive shedding, and thinning can be temporary or become a chronic concern that affects confidence. Here are common causes to check.
Hormonal imbalance
An imbalance of DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is a major cause of hair problems in men. It can shrink hair follicles, make new hair thinner, increase shedding, and eventually contribute to baldness. In women, estrogen helps support strong, thick, healthy hair; when estrogen levels drop, hair shedding may follow. Thyroid hormone levels that are too high or too low can also contribute to hair loss.
Certain medical conditions
Thyroid disease, autoimmune disease, skin conditions, and scalp infections can weaken hair and lead to shedding.
Nutritional deficiency
Strict dieting, fasting, or eating an unbalanced diet may leave the body without enough nutrients, causing hair to become brittle, break, and fall out.
Habits that damage hair and scalp
Frequent use of high-heat styling tools, perming, straightening, coloring, tight hairstyles, and regular use of wigs or hats may weaken the scalp and contribute to hair loss when done repeatedly without proper care.
Stress
Mental health can affect hair health. Ongoing stress triggers stress hormones that may interrupt the hair growth cycle and increase shedding.
Postpartum hair loss
During pregnancy, hormonal changes help support fetal development and may keep hair strong and healthy. After childbirth, hormone levels return to normal, which can cause hair loss, often around three to four months postpartum.
Some medications
Certain medications may cause hair loss, including chemotherapy drugs, birth control pills, some blood pressure medications, blood thinners, and acne treatments. The effect depends on the medication type, dose, and individual response.
